About Dr. Colleen Long

Dr. Colleen Long is a licensed psychologist with more than two decades of academic training and clinical experience in psychology, mental health, and addiction recovery. Her work focuses on providing discreet, high-level psychological support to individuals navigating complex personal, professional, and behavioral challenges.

Dr. Long began her academic training with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, followed by a Master of Science in Psychology. She later completed her Doctorate in Psychology (PsyD), culminating in nearly twenty years of formal education devoted to understanding human behavior, emotional health, and psychological resilience.

Following completion of her doctoral degree, Dr. Long pursued extensive postdoctoral training, completing more than 3,500 hours of supervised clinical fellowship work. During this time she trained in some of Southern California’s most intensive mental health and addiction treatment environments, including Alvarado Parkway Institute in La Mesa. These settings provided experience working with individuals facing severe and complex psychiatric and behavioral health challenges, including substance use disorders, mood disorders, trauma, and co-occurring conditions.

Through this work, Dr. Long developed a deep understanding of both the clinical and human aspects of recovery. She has worked with individuals from many walks of life, including professionals, entrepreneurs, and individuals managing high levels of personal and professional responsibility.

Dr. Long’s approach to psychological care is integrative and individualized. She draws from a range of evidence-based and experiential recovery models, including traditional 12-step approaches such as Alcoholics Anonymous, cognitive and behavioral strategies used in SMART Recovery, and broader psychological frameworks that address the underlying patterns that shape behavior.

Her work also incorporates both Western clinical psychology and insights drawn from Eastern philosophies that explore how individuals develop healthier relationships with areas of life that often become sources of struggle or imbalance—such as money, power, sex, alcohol, drugs, gambling, and other compulsive behaviors.

Rather than focusing solely on symptom reduction, Dr. Long works with clients to better understand the psychological patterns, emotional dynamics, and life circumstances that contribute to unhealthy cycles. Through this process, individuals can develop greater self-awareness, healthier coping strategies, and a more sustainable relationship with the challenges they face.

Dr. Long’s practice emphasizes discretion, trust, and individualized care. Many of the individuals she works with are navigating demanding professional lives while also seeking meaningful personal change. Her role is to provide thoughtful psychological guidance, structured support, and a confidential environment where clients can explore difficult issues honestly and constructively.

Her philosophy is grounded in the belief that meaningful change is possible when individuals are supported with both psychological insight and practical strategies for navigating real-world pressures.

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Long’s work is grounded in the understanding that psychological growth and recovery are never one-size-fits-all processes. Every individual brings a unique history, set of pressures, personal values, and ambitions to the work of meaningful change.

Many of the individuals Dr. Long works with are exceptionally driven people whose intensity, creativity, and ambition have helped them achieve extraordinary success. Yet the same forces that fuel high performance can sometimes become difficult to regulate. When energy, drive, and pressure build without balance, life can begin to feel less like a steady source of light and more like a star burning too intensely.

In astrophysics, a supernova represents a star releasing enormous energy in a powerful but unsustainable burst. By contrast, Polaris—the North Star—burns steadily and reliably, serving as a point of orientation and guidance for travelers navigating uncertain terrain.

Dr. Long’s philosophy of care is not about dimming a person’s brilliance or suppressing their ambition. Instead, her work focuses on helping individuals harness and stabilize their natural intensity so that their energy can remain powerful, sustainable, and directed with intention.

Her approach integrates scientific psychology, comprehensive neuropsychological insight, practical behavioral strategies, and broader philosophical perspectives to help clients develop a more balanced relationship with the forces that shape their lives. Through this process, individuals learn to channel their drive in ways that support both personal well-being and continued high performance—transforming moments of overwhelming intensity into a steady, guiding source of strength.

At Polaris Psychology, the goal is not to extinguish a person’s light, but to help it burn in a way that is both powerful and enduring.
